John Lewis Christmas Advert 2010

YouTube Preview Image

Here’s the 2010 Christmas advert from John Lewis, published about week after the Marks & Spencer ad featuring Peter Kay.

I like this ad but I’m not sure I’d want our children to see it in case they ask “why are that mum and dad sneaking presents upstairs to hide in the loft?”. And is it just me or is it a bit too cold to leave the poor dog outside in his kennel when it’s supposed to be very cold and snowing?

The advert was filmed in Scotland - probably in the middle of summer – and the lyrics accompanying the ad are from Elton John’s ‘Your Song’, sung by Brit Award winner Ellie Goulding.

I cannot believe that this advert must have gone through so many stages of approval and NO-ONE said that the shot of the dog outside in a flimsy wooden kennel looking throughly miserable in the cold garden was a really bad idea and sending completely the wrong message.

Bad mistake, John Lewis. Really bad mistake. But it’s getting them lots of publicity. And I guess they are their advertising company think all publicity is good publicity.
